Manufacturer VIN records: checks, batches and continuity

← Guides

A check digit answers one question. Production records also need a clear identity, state and controlled handover.

Define the structure before the batch

Agree the manufacturer profile, the sequence rules and the intended use of the records. Review the applicable official provisions with the responsible technical team. The EU reference below contains VIN requirements in Annex II; its current applicability must be checked for your vehicle and market.

Understand what a calculation establishes

A format or check-digit calculation checks defined structural rules. It does not authenticate a vehicle, confirm its history or establish type-approval compliance. Treat that result as one control in a broader manufacturer record process.

Keep reserved, used and void records distinguishable

Before allocating a batch, review how records are reserved, marked as used or voided. Keep the reason and responsible user in the team’s working procedure. Avoid silently reusing an identifier from a voided or exported list. Agree who may change a state and what evidence they need.

Review the handover as well as the export

Confirm the batch, state filters and intended recipient before exporting a production list. Reconcile the exported list with the records used in the next process. ManageVIN provides profiles, batch preparation, record states and Excel exports. The handover and reconciliation procedure must still be agreed by the manufacturer.
